A medal built from Iceland's highland landscape for Laugavegur Ultra

The Laugavegur trail is one of the most recognisable hikes in Iceland: rhyolite mountains, black sand and glacier views over roughly 55 kilometres. For the 2026 Laugavegur Ultra, the finisher medal needed to reference that landscape directly, not just carry a generic mountain icon.
The design went through several rounds of sketching before landing on its final form, working through how much of the terrain's texture and colour could survive being reduced to a small metal object worn around the neck.
Runners who finish an ultra like this one have already spent most of a day looking directly at that landscape. The medal only works if it reads as the same place, not as a stand-in mountain shape that could belong to any trail race.
That's the throughline across these medal projects: the design has to hold up as something worth wearing after the race, which means it has to be specific to the place, not generic to the distance.
